Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: On page 6 it said that Mesopotamia is located in what is today Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran.According to the Greeks, Mesopotamia means "between the rivers".Also, the text states that "Mesopotamia included cooler mountainous regions in the North and and-filled wetlands in the southeast." (Steele 6)
Religion: On page 14, it says: "The Sumerians worshipped many gods and goddesses." This shows that they were polytheistic. Also it talks about how there gods have lots of stories. This shows that they like to make up stories and have a good imagination. (Steele 14)
Art: On page 28, the author put: "They were molding clay into simple pots by the eighth millennium BCE." This shows that they wanted to express themselves, even in the eighth millennium. They also invented the potter's wheel, which helped them make pottery quicker. (Steele 28)
Government: On page 8, it talks about how the city-states started to have rulers. It also said: "Thick, defensive walls were built around each city..." This shows that they value protection and didn't want there cities to come down easily. (Steele 8)
Architecture: On page 24, they used Ziggurats and put crafts and food in them to worship the gods. In the text they say "...zigurates were pressed into clay by a cylinder seal." This shows that they could show their way of life. (Steele 24)
Writing: The early people did not write stuff down when civilization began. On page 12 it says "Early people who lived as hunters...did not need written records" this proves exactly my point. in the text it says that exenuall they started to associate symbols with sounds. (Steele 12)
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page 8 it said that Egyptians live mainly on the banks of the Nile, but also along the canals extending from it. Over 90 percent of Egypt consists of desert, which they called the "Red Land." Every year the Nile would flood, leaving behind rich silt on the farmland. (Hart 8)
Religion: On page 24, it says that they are polytheistic, meaning they worship many gods and goddesses. It also says, "Many of the gods were represented by animals..." This shows that they have different forms; they had lots of power. (Hart 24)
Architecture: The very first pyramid built was built as King Djoser's resting place in 2650 BCE. It was supposed to represent a stairway so the pharaoh could join the sun god in the sky. On page 20 it says "Later pyramids contained inscriptions of spells to help the pharaoh in the afterlife." This shows that the people cared about the pharaoh enough to help him even when he died. (Hart 20)
Government: Most of the pharaohs were buried in their tombs in the valley of Kings. Some of their tombs were placed on cliffsides to try and prevent robbers from stealing. This shows that people care about pharaohs enough to not want their things to get stolen. (Hart 22)
Art: It says that people have found party scenes on tomb walls. They also found unique instruments, and songs written on papyri. On page 50 it says "...entertained with singing and music from flutes, harps, and castanets..." This shows that we considered the past and kept some of the same instruments from Ancient Egypt. (Hart 50)
Writing: Scribes were incredibly educated on hieroglyphics. Apparently it was kept hard to decipher so that the scribes could keep their special position. On page 34 it says "...written from left to right, right to left, or top to bottom." This helps my claim of they wanted to keep it hard because people cold never know how it is written. (Hart 34)
