Mesopotamia
Location: On page 6 it said that Mesopotamia is located in what is today Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. According to the Greeks, Mesopotamia means "between the rivers." Also, the text states that "Mesopotamia included cooler mountainous regions in the north and reed-filled wetlands in the southeast."(Steele 6)
Religion: Page 14 says that the Sumerians worshipped many gods and goddess. The text also states "They believed that the stars traveling across the night sky were the cows of Sin or Nanna, the horned Moon god." The text states that later mesopotamians like the Babylonians took up or adapted sumerian gods, sometimes giving them other names.
Art: on page 26 it said that statues were of famous rulers and battles. it also says "Copper ore was being smelted and the molten copper poured into moulds as early as the fourth millennium BCE." on page 28 it says that they created pots out of clay and cloths using looms.(Steele 28,26)
Government: Page 10 says that the city state rulers were honored with many different titles.The text states " sumerian rulers enjoyed great power and fame and their exploits and deeds were remembered for centuries." On page 8 it says that the cities controlled the countryside and became little states with rulers and nobles, palaces and temples.
Architecture: Ziggurats are huge terraced platform made of brick. The text says " like the ancient pyramids of Central America, ziggurats formed part of sacred precincts, which were thought to be the earthly dwelling places of the gods." The text also says " the ziggurats themselves had small temples or shrines on top, reached by long stairways."(Steele 24)
Writing: The Sumerians created the first writing system. They started with pictures and symbols to represent things. The text says " over the centuries the marks developed into script that represented sound as well as meaning. Archeologists call this cuneiform writing."(Steele 12)
Ancient Egypt
Location: on page 8 it said that Egyptians live mainly on the banks of the Nile, but also a long the canals extending from it. Over 90% of Egypt consists of desert, which they called the "Red Land". Every year the river would flood, leaving behind rich silt on the farmland. (Hart,8)
Religion:on page 24 it says some gods were represented by animals. It also says The sun god, Re-Harakhty, was the main god. The text also says "each of the 42 different administrative districts had its own god, and there were many others besides" (Hart,24)
Government: on page 66 it says that the ancient egyptians dated important events to a particular year when certain kings or pharaohs reigned. On page 12 it says that at great state occasions the king and court, as well as the top officials, diplomats, and priests would attend. The text also says "we know this because one courtier boasted that the pharaoh insisted that he kissed the royal leg and not the ground."(Hart,66,12)
Architecture: On page 20 it says that the first pyramid was built by an architect named Imhotep. It also says "It rose in six stages and is called the step pyramid." On page 42 it says that many of the stuff ancient carpenters used have survived including objects made from different trees in the Nile valley or delta.(Hart,20,42)
Writing: On page 32 it says that they would tell scribes that other professions had to work in cramped spaces and that they would live immortally because of their writings. On page 34 it says "Scribes had to be really good at writing hieroglyphs, an elaborate form of picture writing with about 700 different signs." The text also says that hieroglyphs were written on monuments, temples, religious papyri, and tombs.(Hart,32,34)
Art: On page 50 it says that party scenes on tomb walls, musical instruments, and songs on papyri show how much it music meant to them. It also says that music was performed on both special occasions and everyday occasions. On page 56 it says "you can see the glint of gold everywhere in Egyptian jewelry." It also says that goldsmiths would make patterns using a method called granulation.(Hart,50,56)
Ancient China
Technology: On page 24 it said that paper and printing were probably the greatest inventions. It also says on page 22 that magnetic compasses were used in town planning to make sure they were facing a direction with the harmony of nature. In the end the compass was later on used for navigation at sea. (Cotterell,24,22)
Art: On page 14 it says that during a period of war, Sun Zi wrote "The art of war" the world's oldest military handbook. On page 56 It says "In ancient China bronze was made into stunning ritual vessels and weaponry." It also says that china is famous for beautiful high quality ceramics. As well as that the most famous being the blue and white porcelain made during the ming dynasty.(cotterell,14,56)
Government: On page 16 it said "To show his supremacy over the kings he had vanquished, Zheng took the title First Sovereign Qin Emperor, Or Qin Shi Huangdi." It also said that the reign of the first emperor left a permanent impression on Chinese society. On page 18 it says that the earliest members of imperial civil service were recruited by Gaozu to overthrow the Qin dynasty. (cotterell,16,18)
Religion: On page 12 it said that confucius believed the early years of the Zhou dynasty were the golden years for social harmony. It also said "The king's authority was greatly reduced as ambitious lords fought each other for power. This increasing turmoil led confucius to develop a new moral outlook." It says that he based it on kindness, respect, and the strength of family. (Cotterell,12)
Commerce(trade): On page 58 it says "Trade flourished under the mongol or Yuan dynasty." It also says that they controlled the length of the Silk road a series of trade routes that ran from Northern china across Asia. Cotterell also said "Chinese merchant amassed large fortunes by exporting luxury goods such as silk,spices,teas,Porcelain,and lacquerware."(cotterell 58)
Location: On page 6 it said "Vast deserts and mountain ranges cut off China from other cultures in India, West Asia, and Europe." It also said that china was first united as a state in 221 B.C . as well as that the great Wall was built in 214 BC and linked a series of older walls.(cotterell,6)
writing: On page 11 it said "Shang kings used oracle bones to consult the ancestral spirits." In order to find out answers to questions, the ox bone or tortoiseshell was scorched until it cracked. Finally, the answers were inscribed on the oracle bone. (Cotterell, 11)
