Ancient China
Location: On page 38 it said China has 2 great rivers. "The yellow river in northern China, and the Yangzi in the south. The first people in china grew up in these lands. The Northern plains in china have rich loess soil. (Cotterell 38)
Technology: On page 21 it said paper and printing was invented. The text said "dramatically improved communication." The text also said "Gunpowder changed the way in which battles were fought." Boats had compasses so captains knew how to get to places and wouldn't get lost. (Cotterell 21)
Art: On page 56 it said China has always been known for its arts and crafts. It also said "In imperial China, luxury goods formed the major export commodities." It also says that Chinese bronze, silk, jade, lacquer, and porcelain were prized in Asia. Chinese rulers controlled the minerals and had factory's of skilled artisans who putt their crafts to different stages of the manufacturing process. (Cotterell 56)
Commerce (Trade): On page 58 its said Chinese merchants gained large fortunes by exporting luxury goods. They traded things like silk, porcelain, tea, and lacquerware. The text said "Trade flourished under the mongols rule or the Yuan dynasty." The Mongols ruled China and allowed merchants to freely trade. (Cotterell 58)
Government: On page 16 it said that the first Chinese empire was founded after the Qin soldiers defeated "warring states." Under one leader named Zheng. The text also says "Zheng took the title Sovereign Qin Emperor." He took his name from Qin so he could be the first Chinese emperor. (Cotterell 16)
Writing: On page 11 it said that the people would use an ox bone or tortoiseshell for the oracle bones. They would scorch the bone. They would read the cracks and discover answers. The Shang kings used oracle bones in order to speak with their ancestors. (Cotterell 11)
Religion: On page 12 it said confucius believed people should be virtuous, morally good and loyal. Confucius believed that family relationships should be governed with mutual respect. The text also says "He said that a good ruler should set an example by dealing fairly with his subjects using force only as a last resort." This shows that the religion of confucianism is based on mutual respect. (Cotterell 12)
