- - - - For many years, Hollywood has negatively portrayed Asian Americans through racial stereotypes, such as the Dragon Lady or Lotus Blossom, and Asian American filmmakers and other artists have been working to convey true Asian American culture and erase the stereotypes
      - Asian American filmmakers have branched off and started creating films separately from Hollywood with the help of the community, for example, with nonprofits. This allows them to further separate themselves and craft their own image.

      - In Daughter of the Dragon, Wong played a Chinese gangster who displayed *anti-white race pride" (p. 4) and was a double spy, acting as an innocent dancer
    - - In Toll of the Sea, Wong played a docile Chinese woman that forfeited her husband and child that she loved to a white woman because her husband fell in love with her instead
- - - - Lucky M Pool Hall was forced to close after rent shot up. This was done in an effort to repurpose Kearny street to be part of the financial district
      - Part of the Golden Gate expansion reduced 10 blocks of Manila town to 1 block
      - The Milton Meyer Company bought out the I-Hotel, sent eviction notices to all of its residents, and planned to tear it down and replace it with a parking garage
      - In order to expand the financial district, many properties nearby, namely in Japantown and Chinatown, were taken

        Once threats of eviction became more imminent, many groups outside of the Filipino community, such as the Tenant's Organization or the People's Temple, started to get involved. This increased community support allowed them to stay just a little longer.
      - There were many places along Kearny street that Filipinos gathered, like the Lucky M Pool Hall, that were safe spaces for the Filipino communities
- - - - Ben shows multiplicity within one character. In the beginning of the movie, he is more asexual, nerdy, and shy, but at the end of the movie, he kills Steve in order to win Stephanie. "the model minority gone awry, the eunuch turned hyper-phallus" (p. 36)

      - 1:28 Lee is decisively beating his opponent in a match, showing off his lean physique. It is made a point that his opponent isn't an easy target, as he is clearly skilled, doing multiple back handsprings and other difficult moves
      - 1:02:27 Lee continually bests O'Hara in their duels. Even when O'Hara tries to play dirty and grab his feet, Lee still prevails
      - When Lee is training ___, he tells him not to let his emotions get the best of him, which is a common ideology of masculinity

      - 31:15 The academic decathlon was said to be one of the most impressive things for a college resume, so the expectation is that the kids doing it were academically driven. This is such a contrast from the "academic decathlon practice," which consisted of everyone taking shots and passing out on the couch
      - 38:22 Daric pulls a gun on one of the bullies and then Virgil starts kicking him. This makes him feel powerful when is usually the nerdy kid
    - - 4:16 Virgil is staring at a mother's chest while she puts her child in the car and he continues to comment on it to Ben
      - 4:40 Han is introduced as a womanizer, specifically with a picture of him with multiple women in bed. He directly contrasts with Virgil, a much nerdier and more stereotypical Asian character

      - 47:38 When Virgil says that the boys are a club, the girl responds with "a math club?" implying that they are still just seen as a group of Asian guys

      - 58:27 Both robots are breaking free the preconception that they are emotionless things by showing affection for each other. The female robot even starts to tear up because she is overwhelmed with emotion, finally finding someone who understands her
  - - - 46:30 Bob comes up to Archie and pokes him to just see how he feels or reacts. Then, when Archie starts introducing himself, Bob just walks away, ignoring his introduction. The happy music cuts off here to drive the point of neglect and rudeness
      - 47:38 The couple command Archie around by continually telling him to turn around and then eventually making out in front of him and calling him freaky. This shows how they feel superior to him by bossing him around and mocking him
      - 45:34 Mrs. Chan doesn't acknowledge Archie as a real person, ignoring his polite introduction and cutting him off to tell him to do his assignment
      - 45:24 The receptionist says "The coder is here" with a disgusted face when Archie introduces himself. He doesn't say that he is a robot, but she automatically assumes that about him
- - - - 19:10 Mika implies that, while Jake and Kyra raised Mika, they aren't her "real" parents. Following this same logic, then Mika and Yang wouldn't be siblings either, so Mika would have no family in her life. Yang thinks the opposite, where Jake and Kyra are their parents and they are his family.
      - 19:38 Yang says the branch that's taped to the other tree is "becoming an actual part of this tree," but Mika says that it isn't and it is just pretend. This is a metaphor for how Yang sees the family as one cohesive dynamic, but Mika thinks that they are separate units that happen to interact together.
      - 39:49 Throughout Yang's memory of Mika's life, there are one memory of Mika interacting with either of her parents is when she is a newborn and can't even walk
