Manchu reveals everything to Ling Moy. Ling Moy takes it on herself to get revenge on Petrie family.
Reminds me of the viper analogy that Americans used on the Japanese. "A viper is still a viper regardless of where it's born" Ling Moy easily takes the task to kill a white when he just met his Chinese father.
-
All the Chinese workers do not hesitate to lie to the Petrie family. This incinuates the stereotype that Asians shouldn't bet trusted.
Ling Moy is actually in love and doesn't want to kill Petre. Attempts to kill herself but gets stopped. (40:40)
Manchu's dead spirit can represent Asian heritage. While some Chinese immigrants can love America like how Ling Moy loves Petrie, their culture/instinct tells them to kill them. (41:50)
Ah Ke also has feelings for Ling Moy which she takes advantage of to attempt to kill Pietre (44:10).
While Ah Ke is on the protagonist's side, even he is unreliable being Chinese. Perhaps the film implies a white detective wouldn't have fallen for this bait.
After spending time with Ling Moy, Ah Ke offers to go with her ito China. Shows his lack of loyalty to the white man.
Ah Ke realized Ling Moy doesn't love him and is about to backstab him. He comes to his senses and runs off to report her.
While Petrie raids the Asian guys place, he mistakes a random Asian women's scream to be Lin Moy. This mistake really brings up the question if he likes Lin Moy for her or for her "Chinese culture."
These Chinese people just have random trapdoors at their convenience? How long were these Chinese planning on backstabbing these people?

There are no "poor" white people in the film. Roper is shown to be in debt but still lives a wealthy livestyle playing golf. Also, knows martial arts for some reason.
The contrast in setting between the golf course and Hong Kong really highlights the difference between the East and West.
When showing the origins of the colored (black?) martial artist, it shows the struggles he faces in the U.S. Displays the very real threat of police brutality in his community.
William acknowledges the wealth disparity between Han and the boat people. It is a social and economic issue everywhere
Even acknowledging these social issues, he engages with the prostitutes offered by the white woman. These prostitutes aren't solely Asian.
Bruce doesn't accept any of the prostitutes. Is it good he doesn't engage with prostitutes or bad that he portrays himself as asexual?
New Zealand fighter harrassess ship workers. Challenges Bruce Lee. Does he dislike Asians or just people?
-
Han introduces himself with the hit of a gong and a group of women behind him. All the performers in the room pause like the ornaments they're being depicted as.
The group of woman are both the dragon lady and lhe lotus blossum. They're attractive and follow the ordres of Han but are dangerous and precise.
-
Bruce connects with Mai Ling and she doesn't have much valuable information. She is an information but she's still helpless and knows "she doesn't have much time?"

The World of Suzie Wong

Chinese officer plays a role in highlighting the differences between Americans and Chinese. Doesn't want Richard going to cheap hotel because the people there are poot.
Being a white man in Hong Kong, he was assumed to be wealthy.
-
Interracial relationships don't seem to be accepted. Dinner briefly pauses when one is mentioned. Pretty sure white guy who married Chinese is now considered Chinese.
An argument starts over why Susie and Richard can't be in a permanent relationship. They're lifestyles and cultures are too different
Even when in a relationship with Robert, Susie still runs off to care for her child.

She's connected to a real label, the "lady of mystery"
"If Asian women act in ways that bear out either stereotype, then according to Chu's logic, they must be victims of 'internalized' racism or sexism."

Whitewashing the Movies
-
-
Whitewashing occurs because Asian Americans have been depicted as contaminating White society. Asian characters are whitened to fix this
Colonizes the imagination. Moves people of color from position of subject to position of object. pg.4
Ideas of White benevolence, leadership, humanity, and superiority benefit White people all over the world.
-
Whitewashing allows for White representation flexibiility while denying the same to Asian Americans. It also replaces Asian American stores and people with White characters, erasing Asianess.
-
Not casting a community to represent itself is triply problematic. Implies community is unworth of self-representation, incapable of self-representation, and unworthy of concern

Shimizu - Hypersexuality
Paying attention to Asian women's sexuality if seen as betraying their race but their racialized gender as well.

Asian American women are tired to a tradition of excessive and perverse hypersexuality in representation.
