Types of waves
Microwaves
-
-
-
Facts
Longer wave length than visible light, low on the spectrum
-
-
-
-
infrared waves
what type of wave?
-
-
-
-
non ionizing, meaning that they do not have enough energy to knock an electron out of its orbit
-
-
How is it used?
Infrared waves are used for thermal imaging cameras for surveillance, heat lamps, remote controls and detecting celestial objects.
-
Pros and Cons
Infrared waves are typically very secure when used in communication - they can be applied to specific devices with the use of a binary code detecting system, and will only communicate with nearby devices because they cannot pass through walls. This property also limits their use in communication, however, as they cannot transmit signals across large distances. ADD
Radio Waves
-
Longer wavelengths, shorter frequency than light waves
used to transmit different types of information, including sound, video and data
Benefits
-
-
They transmit at a lower frequency, meaning they operate at a lower energy level, meaning it is safer for us.
-
Light Waves
Light moves 299,792,458 meters per second
