GS120 - Education as the Practice of Freedom
bell hooks
What are some aspects of education that would be "liberatory"? How does education lead us to "freedom," and what are some current barriers to that liberatory ideal?
"mutual recognition" - professors/instructors acknowledge themselves and the students as whole people with rich lives --AND THEY LEARN FROM EACH OTHER
this is entirely about power: profs
must
be the all knowing entity because that's how they keep control
"More than anything they seemed enthralled by the exercise of power and authority within their mini-kingdom, the classroom" (17)
CC experiences: asking seemingly open questions but have a secretly right answer (their answer)
some casual violence in the CC120 classroom
keeping access to answers through inaccessible texts/readings/languages
using personal information about students against them
what sparks joy (in the spirit of pleasure and excitement in education)
struggle AND SUCCEED together
emphasis on community and resilience
amplified by Block?
sitting down and being in community
camping and field/experiential ed as a form of connection
TREE SEMESTER - reaffirming interdisciplinary connections and interdependence
interdisicplinary connections to seemingly "hard science" work
vulnerability and love from the prof
belonging cultivated not through a "serious rigor" tone but humorous invitations into hard work
art and creative practice - learning patience
class lessons and learning life lessons
dance and support - "oh, I heard about you"
creative writing and realizing - surprising oneself with what one can do
resisting productivity/neoliberal impulses with crocheting, crafting, and slowing down
REST and feeling
learning a connective network of department folks
emails after the class and reaching out: learning who students are are HOLISTIC scholars
let's go get lunch vibes
interrogating site-specific knowledge: physical and institutional
"couldn't get me out of the lab"
that joy when studying doesn't feel like studying
How to advocate for oneself
send the emails; be 'annoying'
using all the resources possible: in sickness, open communication,
hey, open up to your professor can be helpful
and what do we do with working full time, too?
mentoring with mutual vulnerbaility
having a senior affirm "yeah, it was hard for me, too" AND saying it to each other
some individual meetings and one-on-one convos
sharing about each other
trying to resist some of that peer-pressure norming/conforming
