The Essex Rebellion
The Earl of Essex flirted with the Queen, until a furious row occurred and he turned his back to the Queen, so she punched him. He was banished, and so bitter that he gathered 300 soldiers to try and capture the Queen to put James VI of Scotland on the throne. He was executed, but this rebellion was a sign of instability.
During the 1590s, many of Elizabeth's most trusted advisors died, and she became old and frail, which caused panic about who would succeed her. There was also lots of poverty, made worse by failed harvests.
