- - - - Before you can understand the destination (the main idea), you need to know what road
      - you're on. That's the Topic. The Topic is the person, thing, or idea that is the primary
        
        How to Find the Topic:
        
        Check the first sentence. The topic is almost always introduced immediately.
        
        Look for repeated words or phrases. The author will mention the topic several times,
        
        sometimes using pronouns (it, they) or "compression nouns" (e.g., a "computer" could be called
        
        "the machine").
        
        Understand the Scope. Is the passage about "all birds" or one specific type, like "the emperor
        
        penguin"?

      - The Main Idea is NOT just the topic itself (e.g., "the disappearance of bees") or a vague, one-
        word theme (e.g., "overcoming"). It's a full argument.

        words and punctuation to flag important ideas.
        
        How to find
        
        Point Indicators: Phrases like the point is, key, goal, important, significant.
        
        Punctuation Clues: Dashes (—) and colons (:) often signal explanations of key ideas.

        The physical act of writing down the main point on scratch paper reinforces the idea. The
        
        goal is to summarize the argument, not just list the facts.

        Example: For a passage explaining the Clovis people weren't first in the Americas, a good shorthand
        
        is: "Clovis NOT first."
        
        Transition Words: Words like however, therefore, and in fact flag important shifts or
        
        conclusions.

        Fiction passages usually focus on a particular trait or quality of a character or place.
        
        Don't look for deep symbolism; focus on the literal events and what characters say,
        
        do, and want. Key information is still often at the beginning and end of the passage.
      - Poetry Passages
        
        The main idea might be conveyed indirectly through images or metaphors. However,
        
        your understanding must be strictly supported by the specific wording in the poem
        
        —don't stray too far from the literal meaning. Identify the core subject and what the
        
        speaker is saying about it.
- - - - Think of supporting details like you're a lawyer building a case. You need to present concrete
      - proof (facts, examples, reasons) to convince the jury of your main point. These details are the
        
        Supporting Details are the pieces of information—like examples, reasons, or facts—that
        explain and prove the main idea. They answer "how?" or "why?"
        
        How to Find Supporting Details:
        
        Look for information that directly explains the main idea.
        
        These details are often found in the middle of the paragraph.
        
        Look for signal words like for example, for instance, or because.

        This skillset allows you to read like an expert, quickly identifying key
        
        points and focusing your attention, which is vital for timed tests and college-level
        
        Text Completions: The logical conclusion must align with the main point.
        
        Support/Undermine: You can't support or weaken a claim if you don't know what it is.
        
        Graphics: The data in the graph will almost always relate to the main point being made in
        
        the text.
        
        Purpose Questions: The author's purpose (e.g., to explain, to describe) is directly tied to
