Why were mortality rates higher in medical students than midwives?
Semmelweis made a hypothesis that it was because of not washing hands after autopsies.
Doctors were upset because by Semmelweis' claims. Semmelweis doubted other reasonings (the bad air, the bells, the position of birth) and ordered medical staff to clean hands
Discovery of handwashing with soap, chlorine solution. Becomes a practice today
counter claim : doubt was not the central reason
Meselson Stahl Experiment
Scientists debated how DNA is replicated. In 1953, Watson and Crick proposed that DNA was semi-conservative.
Scientists such as Max Delbruck, questioned the model and suggested new theories.
Creation of 3 new theories, disruptive, conservative and semi conservative.
However, when Messelson and Stahl conducted their experiment, it was verified and confirmed of the semi-conservative theories, therefore disproving other theories.
Max Debruck's doubt lead to conducting the experiment and confirming the theory.

Doubt and Natural Sciences
Sciences real power: drive to question and challenge a hypothesis. Indeed, the scientific approach requires changing our understanding of the natural world whenever new evidence emerges from either experimentation or observation.
Scientific findings are hypotheses that encompass the state of knowledge at a given moment. In the long run, many of are challenged and even overturned. Doubt might be troubling, but it impels us towards a better understanding; certainties, as reassuring as they may seem, in fact undermine the scientific process.(Grjebine, 2024)
