Atomic number + mass
Atomic number, written in a subscript left of the symbol
-
Mass number, written in a superscript left of the symbol
-
Isotopes
“some atoms have more neutrons than other atoms of the same element and therefore have greater mass.”
“A radioactive isotope is one in which the nucleus decays spontaneously, giving off particles and energy.“

Chemical bonds
Atoms with incomplete valence shells share/transfer electrons with other atoms, these interactions create a chemical bond keeping these atoms close to one another
Covalent bond: when two atoms share a pair of electrons, which count as a part of each electrons valence shell
Single covalent, the sharing of one pair of electrons
double covalent/ double bond, the sharing of two pairs of electrons
Electronegativity
more electronegative an atom is, the more strongly it pulls shared electrons toward itself.
nonpolar covalent bond, the atoms share the
electron equally
polar covalent bond, one atom is more electronegative, and the atoms do not share the electron equally

A hydrogen bond forms when a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to one electronegative atom is also attracted to another electronegative atom
Van der Waals interactions are attractions between molecules that are close together as a result of those changes
Bonding capacity is called valence, usually equals the number of electrons required to complete the atom’s outermost (valence) shell
