Behavioral Learning Theory
Main Ideas
learning is a change in observable behavior caused by experience
Learning is gradual and strengthened through practice and repetition
Reinforcement makes us want to do the behavior again
Punishment makes us less likely to repeat the behavior
Key Principles
learning is measurable and observerable
practice and repetition help learning stick
learning results from the effect of stimuli on responses
most surprising principle
Punishment does not always stop a behavior-sometimes it just hides it
principles and theorists
punishment and reinforcement- B.F. Skinner
Classical conditioning- Ivan Pavlov
Behaviorism- John Watson
Important Theorists and their key contributions
B.F. Skinner- Skinner Box
Ivan Pavlov- Dog experiment
John Watson- little Albert Experiment
Classroom Example
In grade 1 Reading, Teacher claps when students sound out words correctly
One strength
gives clear and simple ways( like rewards & consequences) to shape students behavior
One Weakness
Does not look on what is happening in mind, just looks only on what we can see
Connection to my own experience
Teacher rewarded us with stickers when we did well.
sometimes there were punishments( like staying after class) for not following rules
My Question for Class
How can teachers use rewards in a way that can motivate students to understand lesson, not just for prizes?
