behavioral learning theory
key principles :
Learning is a change in observable behavior
behavior can be shaped by reinforcement and punishment
learning occur through association
learning is strengthened through continual practices
Important theorists
B.F. Skinner - operate conditioning
John B. Watson - early promoter of behaviorism
Ivan Pavlov - classical conditioning
Classroom Example
whenever student solve problems correctly on board, the teacher gives verbal praise or add points toward group reward. This positive reinforcement encourage students to participate more actively in class
Strengths
Provide effective strategies for managing behavior
Easy to apply in classroom for motivation and discipline
Reward and practice can make learning faster
Limitation
Only focuses on observable behavior by ignoring emotions and thinking
Limitation
students may rely too much on reward rather then understanding
Doesn't explain creativity
Connection to My Own Experience
When I was teaching, i gave small star to a students who finished their work on time, I noticed they became more excited to complete tasks quickly. This showed me how rewards can change classroom behaviors
My Question
How can teachers use behaviorist strategies without making students rely on external motivation?
