In 1889, Charles McBurney published his landmark paper describing the indications for early laparotomy for the treatment of appendicitis
Eventually, early appendectomy became the accepted standard of care, with broad indications in order to prevent perforation.
In the 1970s, the negative effects of the large number of appendectomies of un-inflamed appendices were noted, and the focus gradually shifted toward a more conservative approach to exploration
