Animals and creatures that help us:
Natural Science
Animals provide food
Cows give us milk, sheep give us wool, chickens give us eggs, bees give us honey (Heimduo, 2020).
Learners look at and examine pictures of animals and discuss what each animal provides. They will then classify each animal based on the type of food they produce.
Helpful insects
Bees pollinate and earthworms enrich soil (Harness, 2022).
Learners observe pictures and videos of insects and investigate how important each of these insects are. They will also compare soil with and without earthworms to discover the difference.
Social Science:
Animals in history
People used animals for transport, carrying goods, and performing tasks such as operating mills (South African History Online, 2020).
Learners will look at pictures of animals that were used for different tasks in the past. They will create a simple timeline to show how the use of animals in history evolved over time.
Animals and geography
Animals live in different regions around the world, jaguars and toucans in South America, snow leopards in Asia (Reality Pathing, 2022).
Learners will examine different animals and and consider where in the world they live. They will investigate and then place picture cards of animals on a world map to show the regions where those animals are found.
Technology:
Animal products in technology
Learners explore animal products (wool, silk, leather) by observing the raw materials and the finished products. They will be required to match the raw materials to the products.
Wool, silk, and leather are processed into useful products (Heimduo, 2020).
Designing systems to support animals
People make beehives, horse stables, birdcages, and shelters to support animals (Teacha!, 2022).
Learners will explore how man-made structures are made to support animals by building a shelter for an assigned animal. They will first observe examples and then work in groups to design and construct a model.
