Control of soviets
This gave the Bolsheviks authority
It also allowed Lenin to push through decisions quickly
Lenin made sure the Bolsheviks had control in the key soviets like Petrograd and Moscow
Cheka
It spread fear making people too scared to challenge Bolshevik rule
It helped Lenin eliminate rival political parties
The Cheka was set up in 1917 to crush opposition and stop revolutionaries
Civil war
The Red Army led by Trotsky was disciplined and strong
Victory showed the Bolsheviks were the only group able to hold Russia together
The Bolsheviks defeated the Whites in the Russian Civil War
Opposition parties
Opposition newspapers were banned which silenced criticism
This left the Bolsheviks as the only legal political party
Lenin closed down the Constituent assembly in 1918 after the Bolsheviks lost support
Treaty of Brest Litovsk
It was very harsh but it gave the Bolsheviks space to focus on threats
Many disliked it but it was key to survival at the time
Lenin pulled Russia out of World War 1 in 1918 with this treaty
