Ways to classify sports injuries
Direct Injury
: Resulting from an external force impacting the body, generally happens quickly.
Indirect Injury
: Resulting from forces.
Direct
: Eg. bruises, breaks
Indirect
: Eg. Concussions, Sprains
Soft Tissue Injury
: Injury to soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons, muscles.
Hard Tissue Injury
: Injury to bones, teeth + dislocations
Hard Tissue
: Eg. Knocked out teeth, dislocations, breaks
Soft Tissue
: Sprains, bruising
Overuse Injury
: Injury caused by excessive use, poor technique or equipment.
Eg. Tennis Elbow, Stress Fractures
Soft Tissue Injuries
Tears, Sprains, Contusions.
Skin Abrasions, Lacerations, Blisters
Inflammatory Response
Phase 1:
Inflammatory Phase, 1-4 days, pain, redness, swelling, loss of function, oedema
Phase 2:
Repair and Regeneration phase, 3-6 days, new fibres, scar tissue produced.
Phase 3:
Remodelling Phase, 6 weeks, progressive mobilisation, formation of replacement tissue, increased strength.

: look at injury for deformity, swelling
Touch
: touch injury to detect for pain and heat
Active movement
: Can athletes move body part themselves without pain
Passive movement
: Can you move the athletes body part without pain
Skills test
: Can the athlete perform sport specific skills to a high standard
