      - A negative ion is formed when an atom gains one or more electrons
  - - - The numbers of protons and electrons are not equal anymore, so the effect off the positively-charged protons and negatively-charged electrons is not cancelled out
  - - - By losing electrons, the number of protons becomes greater than the number of electrons. Thus, the ion has a net charge from the positively-charged protons
