ATOMS, IONS & MOLECULES
-
IONS
-
When an atom becomes an ion, it is NOT electrically neutral anymore
Why?
The numbers of protons and electrons are not equal anymore, so the effect off the positively-charged protons and negatively-charged electrons is not cancelled out
Atoms of metals always lose electrons to form positive ions and atoms of non-metals gain electrons to form negative ions
When the atom becomes an ion, the number of protons & neutrons remain constant
-
MOLECULES
What are molecules?
-
Atoms are often diagrammatically represented by color, shape or size
Atoms of the same element have the same color, shape or size
