Speed and Velocity - Coggle Diagram
Speed and Velocity
Speed
A measure of the distance an object travels per unit of time.
Typical Speeds
meters per second (m/s)
kilometers per hour (km/h)
Miles per hour (mph)
Units of Speed
Units of distance divided by units of time.
Constant Speed
The rate of change of position in which the same distance is traveled each second.
Changing Speed
Instantaneous speed
Speed at a specific instant in time.
When something travels at a different distance each second, its speed is changing.
Average Speed
The total distance traveled divided by the total time taken to travel that distance.
The symbol
ū
represents the term "average velocity".
Distance-Time Graphs
Distance-time graphs show the comparisons of distance and time.
Can show the distance something might travel when distance measurements change.
Comparing Speeds on a Distance-Time Graph
Steeper lines on distance-time graphs indicate faster speeds.
Using. a Distance-Time Graph to Calculate Speed
You can use distance-time graphs to calculate the average speed of an object.

Velocity
The speed and the direction of a moving object.
Representing Velocity
An arrow can be used to represent the displacement of an object from a reference point.
A greater speed is shown by a longer arrow.
Changes in Velocity
Velocity changes when...
the speed of an object changes.
the direction that the object moves changes.
both speed and direction change.
