Tsar's autocracy
The orthodox church supported the tsar and taught people he was chosen by God
Many Russians respected the tradition of monarchy and loyalty to the Tsar
The tsar has complete power and could make decisions without parliament
Peasant discontent
Famines and poor farming methods caused hardship in villages
The peasants wanted more land which made them restless and angry
Most peasants lived in poverty and faced heavy taxes
Industrial workers
Factory conditions were unsafe and unhealthy
Strikes and protests showed rising anger among workers
Workers in cities has very low wages and long hours
Opposition groups
Socialists wanted to end autocracy and create equality
Terrorist groups like the SR used violence to fight with the Tsar
Liberals wanted a parliament and more freedoms
Repression and control
Censorship stopped many books and newspapers criticising the Tsar
The army was loyal and could crush uprisings very quickly
The Okhrana spied on opponents and arrested them
