How might we keep young people entertained whilst in a restaurant?
Why?
Helps parents enjoy their meal
When children are occupied, parents can relax and enjoy their food without constant distractions
It reduces stress for families, making dining out feel like a treat rather than a challenge
It creates a pleasant atmosphere for everyone. Unoccupied kids may disturb other diners
Builds positive associations with eating out. When children have fun going out, they're more likely to enjoy going again
When waiting for food or service, patience is encouraged. This builds social etiquette in public settings
Challenges
Short attention span, children get bored easily and their entertainment may not last them the whole meal
Space limitations
Restaurants are not designed like playgrounds for young people to run around
There is often limited space at the table, so activities have to be small and not clutter eating areas
Different age groups
What might entertain a 4 year old might not entertain a 10 year old
It is hard to find one activity that entertains all children at once
Screens and phones can cause dilemmas. Too much screen time is not good, loud videos can disturb other diners, and screens can be difficult for parents to take them off their kids when food arrives
Possible solutions
Table-friendly activities
Colouring sheets and crayons
Activity menus
Reusable trivia and card games
Quiet digital options
Provide free Wifi in the restaurants
Encourage headphones to not disturb others
Tabletop tablets built into the restaurant's tables
Interactive dining experiences
Making own cupcakes or pizza
Mini tasting, let kids sample sauces or toppings
Restaurant layout and design
A small kids play area in family focused restaurants
Outdoor seating areas where children can roam more easily
