banner, add/drop
gen eds
contacting profs and communicating with faculty
unlearning some of the high school paradigms
high school: memory and recall, name and date identification, a lot of steps and hand holding,
dialogical, not always having step by step and clear, there's a shared flexibility around scheduling; personal connections
advocating for oneself around times and deadlines (hey, talk to your prof about deadlines)
balancing curricular, athletic, and co-curricular obligations
hey, they're doing independence, maybe for the first
Tips
creating informal spaces for mentorship
using tech to share formal and informal messages/critique
get on their level; avoid reproducing space/rhetoric that signals top-down power
i'm not on the teacher's side on this
nerding out
WHat is "Critical Agency"?
being able to identify when, where, how to take action in given situations
"critical agency demands that mentors empower and enable themselves and their mentees to take a dialectical (rather than monological or unidirecitonal) stance toward institutional culture" (55) -- seeing there's not a one size fits all approach; not a "do as we say, don't question it", but it holds multiple experiences together to make sense of the institution
