Physics Science Investigation Deconstruct Topic Areas
Radiation
Testing the shielding properties of different materials for different types of radiation (gamma/beta/alpha)
Issues
Radiation poisoning is a big risk, and would invalidate the experiment due to the inherent danger
Procuring materials will be a large issue due to their typically restricted nature
Measuring data may be difficult, especially with dangerous materials
Creating radioactive solutions and testing their effects on different materials
Issues
Danger of ingestion
Any skin contact will be dangerous, and could potentially cause radiation poisoning
Failures in this experiment will be disastrous, and would permanently destroy the materials used.
Aerodynamics
Utilise wind tunnel to test different designs of bridges, and their durability
Issues
Wind tunnel may be too small to create a model that would be big enough to be significantly affected by the wind tunnel
Properties of the bridge would be difficult to keep constant, providing few control variables, giving much less consistent data
There is no clear way to measure the "effectiveness" of a given design, as tension wouldn't be possible to measure, and other metrics such as drag coefficient would be difficult to measure or model.
Change the size/shape of a parachute, and test the change in speed/resistance
Issues
Change in speed would be very easily predictable (aside from random errors) and as such would not yield useful data for analysis
Airflow, regardless of location, would interfere with the experiment, as accounting for it would be nearly impossible given how the airflow is inconsistent at best.
While the size of the parachute would be easy to change and analyse, the result would be more accurately predicted utilising modelling technology instead of tests, making the test itself somewhat redundant.
Light
Thread spacing experiment
Issues
While easy to obtain materials, they may be difficult to work with due to small size required, and potential mishandling of equipment
Already completed experiment previously
May take significant time to complete
