Cuban Missile Crisis
E.g.After WW2, US followed an approach of supporting friendly governments and undermined any government that seemed to likely become communist
-In 1959, Fidel Castro overthrew the pro-US government of Cuba and took power plus USSR provided Cuban with weapons and air defences to protect them from a likely US invasion
-A nuclear war seemed very likely but both sides stand down at the end which made it concerning that the USA and USSR would be open to pursuing a less hostile relationship with one another in the late 1960s and early 1970s
