Vietnam war
Tet Offensive impact
E.g.In November 1968, Richard Nixon was elected President so he and Henry Kissinger worked to end US involvement in Vietnam
-Nixon gave responsibility of war to South Vietnamese forces and withdrawed US troops and all parties signed Paris Peace Accords to end war and restore peace in Vietnam
-US eventually left Vietnam and wanted to provide financial aid to South Vietnam but rejected by Congress
Outbreak of Vietnam War
On August 1964, North vietnamese patrol boats attacked the USS Maddox, a US destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin
-Gulf of Tonkin incident gave Johnson the power to take all neccessary measures to prevent further aggression and achieve peace and security
-US also sent troops to fight in Vietnam while US allies also sent soldiers over the course of the war
Aftermath

Detente
E.g.US souht greater understanding with USSR known as detente(reduction f tension)
-In 1972, US and USSR signed the Anti-Ballistic Missle Treaty to reduce nuclear weapons
-US also ended its block on the issue of China's representation at the United Nations and Nixon made visits to China to improve diplomatic relations
