Fitness class for the elderly
they could have injuries/disabilities
I could include seating options/some exercises that can be done while seated.
effective and suitable exercises
to learn what exercises would be suitable, I could interview professionals, such as geriatric workers. I could also interview my VET course instructor who works in the fitness industry and has hosted many fitness events at nursing homes and aged care facilities.
researching on the internet
dynamic warm up, static stretches for cool down
compound exercises to engage multiple muscles along with core
equipment required
light weights 0.5kg-3kg dumbells
benches??, chairs, aerobic stepper, yoga mats, resistance bands

where will it happen?
locations that are easy for me to go to: near my house or near school
helping hand
glen osmond grove care community
kensington aged care facility
outdoor or indoor?
Outdoor pros: the feeling of being outdoors is known to reduce stress and also increases Vitamin D in the body from being exposed to the sun. Research has also shown that seniors who exercise outdoors have better physical functioning and improved mental clarity (less brain fog and anxiety).
Outdoor cons: the weather could be extreme (very hot/sunny or very rainy/windy). Floor based esercises may be difficult as floor will be grass or concrete and may hurt.
indoor pros: controlled weather-proof environment, safer flooring indoor cons: less vitamin d, less benefits from fresh air, sun, etc.
when will it happen?
In the holidays so that I can have trial runs with my friends before hand to receive feedback and then after the class, I have time to edit the video.
How can this be beneficial for the participants? (short-term and long-term)
short term: this will help them be active and learn a variety of new exercises
long term: I can provide a handout to all the participants that includes some information about common illnesses/diseases (such as osteoperosis) that are common as you age and how exercise can help. I can also include some exercises they can do in the future by themselves to stay active.
the handout can include why exercise is important, Australian physical health guidelines for people aged 65 and above and some exercises they can do by themselves
also help with social interaction and getting out of comfort zone to try a new activity
other risks:
if they are reluctant to join in
risk of injury from falling
risk of overexertion and health conditions (heart problems, osteoperosis, etc)
how to make the class more engaging
music
make it like a game
have more group exercises
communicating more
