Use:

Example: She had left before I arrived.

Would Rather:
Less formal
Subject + would rather + base verb
Ex: Iād rather stay.
Prefer:
More formal
Prefer + noun / -ing / to + verb
Ex: I prefer tea to coffee.

Preferences, plans, decisions

Structure:
Modal + have + past participle
Uses:
ā Could have: past possibility
ā Might/May have: speculation

ā Should have: criticism/regret
Example: She must have forgotten.
