1.4.2 Recruitment, selection and training
-
-
Training of employees
On-the-job training - Where employees are trained while carrying out an activity which is often at their place of work. This is cost effective but reliant on another employee to shadow the training
Off-the-job training - Involves employees learning and training away from the job, at a different location. It offers a wider range of skills and qualifications more than the businesses field of skills

1.4.5 Leadership
A managers job is to plan, organise and coordinate. A leaders job is to set clear goals and help managers achieve them
Leadership styles
Autocratic leader - Makes all the decisions independently of the employees. Decision making is quickly put into practise without consulting employees, may lead to unmotivation as they have very little say on decisions
Paternalistic leader - More attention is given to the social needs and views of workers. The paternalistic leader acts as a father figure to employees at the business. They consult employees over any issues and therefore they feel motivated as they believe their views are being recognised
Democratic leader - Encourages others to participate in decision making through consultation, often acting upon the majority opinion of an issue. They favour delegation and passing on roles down the hierarchy
Laissez-faire leader - Indecision or absence at the top creates a decision-making vacuum which is filled by more junior staff with new ideas and suggestions which can fox old problems within the business. Lines of communication can be confused
