Singapore's political development in the late 1950s
The first Merdeka talk in 1956 is for more independence from the British, this was after Hock Lee Bus Riots. - 3rd
David Marshal resigned and Lim Yew Hock took over.
The 1959 election - 6th

The Second Merdeka talk - 5th
Lim Yew Hock proved that he could control the riots and gave the British the control of internal security.
Chinese middle school students' riots - 4th
Background
Protest by 5000 students but unsuccessful
Government expelled 142 students for communist activities.
Labour Front Chief Minister, Lim Yew Hock banned the SCMS Student Union in fear of communist activities.
CONSEQUENCES
Students had support of unions
Students became defiant and were willing to fight.
Demonstration became violent
13 people died. 120 injured. Union leaders detained
Labour Front government seemed effective in managing challenges and renewed hope for self-government, helped in making the second merdaka talk a success with British granting self-government
Troops from Malaya were called to support
But the event will cost Lim Yew Hock's government the support of the masses, in the end, people voted for PAP instead of the election of self-governmence

Descriptions
Members continued with hunger strike outside bus depot
Members of the Singapore Bus Workers Union (SBWU) went on strike for unfair treatment which resulted in them being dismissed from work
Union members supported by Chinese medium school. Other bus company members joined and situation became worse
Police responded in batons and caused injuries to members
Consequences
David Marshal was seen as weathers in the eyes of the British. They thought he would be unable to handle the communist and Singapore might turn communist in his hands.
Lost of lives and more chaos in public transport.
Workers lost trust in the British and police.
