Sophocles was born around 496 BC in Colonus, near Athens. While details of his life are limited and come mainly from the Suda Lexicon, we know he was raised to be a leader and played roles as a diplomat, general, and priest. His true passion was drama. He wrote around 123 plays, but only seven survive fully, including his famous Theban plays: Oedipus the King, Antigone, and Oedipus at Colonus. Sophocles introduced theatrical innovations like painted scenery and a third actor. His works often explore fate, free will, and the complexity of human choices.
