Definition:
"words that come from the same root"
"born together"
words that are similar in two languages and can be used to teach vocabulary to ML students
Characteristics: found in related languages so languages in the same language family will be likely to have more cognates that unrelated languages.
** Must have same meanings

Non-example 2: false cognates - words with similar sounds but different meanings
