Introduction to Early Science
Science means knowledge about the natural and social world, gained through systematic methods.
Early science introduces scientific learning to children through observation, questioning, and exploration of everyday objects and nature.
Children and Science
Emphasizes building scientific attitudes and mastering science process skills.
Early science covers three main domains:
1.Living World
2.Material World
3.Physical World
Objectives of Science Education
Formation of Scientific Attitudes – curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, honesty, open-mindedness, objectivity, responsibility, cooperation, and being systematic.
Mastery of Science Process Skills – observation, classification, measurement, inference, prediction, and communication.
Importance of Early Science in ECE
Encourages learning through hands-on experiments.
Develops observation, sensory, and motor skills.
Supports vocabulary building and understanding of the world.
Prepares children academically and helps them discover their interests.
Promotes cognitive, psychomotor, and affective development.
Nurtures appreciation for God's creation and care for the environment.
Children and the Environment
Environmental education helps children:
Become more aware of environmental problems (e.g., global warming, water stress).
Understand ecological topics like energy, water, air, and wildlife.
Role of the Teacher
Facilitate inquiry-based learning.
Observe children’s interests and provide open-ended questions.
Connect science to real-life situations.
