British plans for a gradual transfer of power

british allowed some locals to take part of the government but were unofficial

although negotiations failed, he did not want to call in British troops as he did not want to appear siding with British

David marshall went for the first merdeka talks
Marshall asked for self-independence and was declined, he stepped down as chief minister, and lim yew hock stepped up
wanted immediate independence within a merger and giving workers rights and working conditions
winner of 1955 elections by winning 10 seats
were not offered full support as they did not want immediate independence.

wanted immediate independence via merger with malaya

Chinese were disappointed in how lim yew hock dealt with the riots and lost the elections
British attitude for decolonisation
British could not afford to hold on to it's entire empire
too costly colonies such as india and africa, british were quick to let go
colonies that had value
include malaya, nothern borneo territories as they still produce tin etc. and Singapore
even British had to let go, they had to ensure the colonies fit their interest and not become communist
due to the emergence of the cold war
many people in SG supported in communism as the MCP(Malayan communist party) took part in the anti-japanese army
how communist influence was spread in SG
trade unions
anti-british feelings grew and more than 300 strikes occured by around 70,000 people and riots by students
led by members of MCP and reached out to people
Chinese middle schools
teachers were not happy with their pay and unhappy with the fact that you were not able to return if you went to china
were promised better lifes if British was overtrown
growing domestic unrest
discontent among locals on how british dealt with problems
riots broke out
Hock Lee Bus Riots
workers were unhappy with pay and working conditions
workers along with the MCP members went on a strike and the workers were dismissed
went on a hunger strike and sat in the front of the bus gates
Chinese middle school riots
students started to protest as the government banned the singapore chinese middle schools students union due to their communist activities
students from chinese middle schools were thus expelled
students with the support of trade unions caused there to be riots as they grew defiant
Lim yew hock called in troops from malaya to stop the riots
went for 2nd merdeka talks
