Species the sustain the Brazil Nut Tree
The Agouti
A small rodent that uses its sharp teeth to bite through the hard shell of a seed pod.
They bury some of these seeds to come back for later. However they may forget about them or get killed as they are prey.
The forgotten seeds will be able to germinate and grow into a brazil nut tree.
Without the Agouti, seed pods will fall to the forest floor and rot as the seeds wont be able to break through the pod to germinate.
Humans
The indigenous community of the Amazon protect the forest as they are living sustainably and use their traditional ecological knowledge which helps sustain the tree species.
Sustainable farmers prevent logging and encourage regeneration
The Orchid Bee and Euglossine Bee
Only the females of this species can pollinate the Brazil nut tree as they are large and strong enough to force open the petals to get to the pollen and nectar to develop the seed pod.
Once pollinated the seed pod can take up to 14 months to mature.
These bees rely on mating. In order to survive they must find a partner.
The male bees collect lots of pollen from Orchids which live in the high branches and canopy of the forest.
The more pollen they collect, the more likely they are going to be detected by a female as the scent of the pollen is stronger.
The Brazil Nut tree cannot be farmed in a monocultural plantation as it would not be able to support all the different types of pollinators and all the species (orchids and the bees) that collectively contribute to the tree's pollination. This connects to the farmers having to harvest the nuts sustainably.
Other pollinators, fruit feeders, leaf feeders and organisms that feed on decaying wood.
Once the brazil nut tree has died natrually, it creates a space in the canopy and disturbs the ground.
Many of these species are adapted to these events and emerge when the tree has fallen.
They eat the dead wood, pollen, leaves, flowers to survive.
They will then get eaten themselves. Maintaining the complex food webb of the forest from the Brazil Nut Tree.
