💡 5. WHY (Why did the Holocaust happen?)
These are some of the main forces that helped cause the Holocaust. Your task as a learner is to think about how they connect — and why people allowed it to happen.
C. Scapegoating After WWI 💣
After Germany lost WWI, many Germans were angry and looking for someone to blame. Hitler blamed Jews, communists, and others for Germany’s problems.
D. Propaganda & Censorship 📺
The Nazis controlled newspapers, radio, and schools to spread lies and fear — and silence people who disagreed.
B. Nazi Racial Ideology 🧬
Nazis believed Germans (Aryans) were a superior “master race.” They saw Jews, Roma, and others as racially or genetically “inferior.”
E. Fear & Obedience in a Totalitarian State 🛑
Speaking out was dangerous. Many followed orders, stayed silent, or believed the propaganda.
A. Antisemitism ✡️
Deep-rooted hatred and stereotypes of Jews existed across Europe for centuries. The Nazis made this hate official government policy.
F. Widespread Indifference or Complicity 😶
Many people knew what was happening — but didn’t speak up, help victims, or stop it. Some even helped the Nazis carry it out.
