Rise of militarist Japan - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Enjoyed a period of boom during WW1 as the other countries were busy with war and thus need to purchase from Japan
      - Recession followed when competition returned and Japanese goods were nolonger in demand and Japan sunk into recession
      - There was great resentment towards the civilian government when there was high level of unemployment and high prices
    - - Mass withdrawals- bank run happened in 1927 when people sensed that the banks could be over extending creddits
      - Many banks collapsed and the people lost their money- unhappy with the government
      - Things improved by 1929 but Japan was once again hit by the great deppression
    - - Impact on Farmers- cannot sell their product, prices crash. Suffered and blames government
      - Impact on small business- cannot move their products, many went bankrupt, blameed government
      - Impact on urban workers- unemployment=> decline in living standards- blamed the government
  - - - The country side did not benefit from the improvement of standdard of living as those in the city with advancement,- Uneven growth
        
        There was insufficient land due to large population growth land productivity was low as well
        
        Many farmers were tenant farmers, much of their produce was surrendered to the landlords
        
        This again led to unhappiness among the rural folks
    - - Riots- Rice riots 1918
        
        There was a growing gap between the urban rich- urban poor and the rural rich- rural poor ( Wealth was concentrated in the hands of 2 percent of the population)
        
        Wealth concentration in the hands if the Zaibatsu (Rich businesses)
  - - - weaknesses in Japanese democracy- new Emperor Taisho was sickly, along with it many old genro also retired, there was no strong leaders to unify the government
      - division within the 3 groups (courts official, civilian politicians and military) deepened
      - Military did not subscribed to politicians' internationalist policy (cooperation with other countries) and start to act independently
      - Some government collapsed because the military refused to supply members to the cabinet.
- - - - Dissatifaction with how they handled foreign policy. Deemed the civilian govt weak accepting bad terms at London Naval Conference.
      - Felt that the civilian govt was working against the people and colluding with the Zaibatsu and landlords
  - - - Series of Assassination
        
        Nov 1930- Right wing fanatic shot and killed Prime Minister Hamguchi
        
        Feb 1932 Finance Minister was murdered
        
        March 1932- Head of Mitsu Cooperation was assassinated
        
        MAY15 INCIDENT ( MILITARY COMTROLLED GOVT)
        May 1932- Prime minister Inukai was assassinated because he did not agree to the militarist's action in Manchuria (Setting up of Manchukuo- coup d'etat ensued but failed)
        Military Leaders backed the soldiers who started it and excused them.
        Demanded for political reforms- managed to stop the largest party from forming a new govt.
        26 May 1932, the emperor appointed a navy officer to become the Prime Minister- Out of the 15 ministers in the cabinet, 10 were from the military
