Dimensions and Tolerance
WHAT IS DIMENSION?
a dimension is a numerical value that defines the size, location, orientation, or form of a feature on a part or assembly. It helps communicate: Length, width, height, and diameter. Tolerance limits for manufacturing
RULES OF DIMENSIONING
RULES
Dimensions should not be duplicated, i.e. same dimension should not be repeated on different views, or the same information need not be given in two different ways
-
Dimension lines, extension lines and object outlines should not cross or overlap
-
WHAT IS TOLERANCE?
tolerance is the allowable variation in a dimension. It defines the maximum and minimum limits a part’s size or geometry can deviate from the nominal value.
TYPES OF TOLERANCE
Bilateral Tolerance: allowed to vary in two directions from the specified dimension. Both directions need not vary by the same amount.
