Nervous 2
CNS
-
-
-
-
-
Gray matter: Basal ganglia, collection of cells (CNS nuclei, PNS ganglia), involved in motor and cognitive functions
White matter: connects left and right brain, comprised of myelinated axons, associated fibers (connect lobes), commissural fibers (connect hemispheres), projection fiber (connect cortex to spinal chord)
-
Spinal chord
Enclosed in vertebral canal, brain stem to lumbar region
Dorsal root, sensory input, afferent
Ventral root: motor output, efferent
Cervical spine, Thoracic spine, lumbar spine, sacrum, coccyx
-
Limbic system
Thalamus: relays sensory information to the cerebellum, special sensation
Hypothalamus: connects nervous system to endocrine system, controls heart rate and temperature
Hippocampus: memory storage and retrieval, STM to LTM
-
Midbrain
-
Pons: relay station, forebrain to cerebellum, controls respiration and involuntary actions
Medulla Oblongata: connects brain and spinal chord, contains nuclei associated with bodily functions such as heartrate
Cerebellum- Automatic processing center, motor control
Protection of CNS
Meninges
Dura mater: loose covering of brain, 2 layers
Arachnoid mater: filament projections, CSF reabsorption site
-
CSF
-
Stored in ventricles (lateral, third, fourth make CSF)
Blood brain barrier
Endothelial cells, tight junctions, pericytes, basement membrane, astrocytes
