PE is an ideal environment for personal and social development due to its physically active nature and opportunities for freedom of expression outside the typical primary classroom.
Many teachers personal attributes and experiences in life have shaped who they are and what life skills they aim to model for their pupils - even if it is happening implicitly more often than explicitly.
Teachers are observing a range of life skills occurring all the time but more often than not it just happens and it wasn't part of their PE planning.
Emerging/lacking- resilience, self-confidence, empathy, compromise, emotional regulation, coping
Why? Helicopter parenting, over protection, social media and technology, sedentary lifestyle, diversity of schools, social contexts
Yet teachers do not see them explicitly as a priority in their planning and rather see it as moments that could and can occur in PE lessons and understand how they can contribute to the overall success of a PE lesson and indeed the success a child may encounter as they grow and develop through their educational journeys and working lives.
Ideas on how to tailor a PE environment into a life skill rich learning zone: mixed ability groupings; appropriate challenge and goal setting for groups individuals; autonomy-based teaching and learning; whole, part, whole method; teachable moments; small-sided games; sport ed. curriculum/TPSR model, stipulation based games, the giving and rotation of roles within teams; orienteering; integration; yard games; peer tutoring and modelling in multigrade settings; whole school mottos.
