This quote was just so powerful to me, especially in light of our current political space. It reminds me of a statement (or variation of this) that I heard a lot growing up as an immigrant. People would be talking about immigration and how "they" come to steal "our" jobs, etc, etc.... I would just let people talk and then when they came to the end of their diatribe, It would go something like: Me: "oh, so you're talking about me and my family"
Them: "No,Not you"
Me: "Why not? Is it because I'm from England, not Mexico? Or is it my white skin? Blue Eyes?" Then I would just sit out the awkward pause and their stammering explanation. This mindset just irks me so much, especially when I had friends whose families came here just as legally as mine, but they would have this prejudice against them but I was afforded a privilege of not being labeled as "other".
