KoG but make it Christian
Natural Theology
Reasoning through the natural world. GOd's revelation is present in his creation and human reason has the ability to discover it
Through sensing God
Aquinian
Human reason can never truly understand God's infinite divine nature, however we can use reason to gain lesser knowledge of God, including:
God's existence through teleo & cosmo
Moral Law
Nature by analogy
Karl Barth & Augustine
Barth was influenced by Augustine, who claimed that after the fall our ability to reason became corrupted by original sin. This is a problem for natural theology which wants to make use of reason
The finite has no capacity for the infinite
We cannot reliably discover Natural Law, as we may discover a corrupted version of it. Humans believing that they can understand what is right & wrong led to
Aquinas claims that pre-fall human nature contains three 'goods;
Inclination towards good
Oringial sin destroyed this perfect control, however our other two goods remained untouched
Only rational beings can sin, therefore as we can sin we must have some ability of reason
Perfect control over the soul
The proportions of a human souk
Undermines faith by making revelation pointless
What is the point in revelation if we can already reason God
NT supports revelation to show that it is reasonable to believe in God
Revealed theology
Knowing God can be obtained from his revelation to us in Jesus and the Bible
Sensus Divinatis
All humans have an innate sense of the divine. Natural theology usually deals with our other sense like sight which enable us to gain knowledge of the world. But the sense of divinity enables us to gain knowledge of God's existence. Even unwducated people and tribes believe in God
Studies of tribal religions shows that there is belief in otherworldy beings
The rise of atheism suggests that this 'sense of the divine' is still something that is culturally conditioned, as there was previously little other explanation for the way the world is. However, there is now significant philosophical support for atheism, allowing it to be a majority view in many countries
Sin clouds rationality, which could also block meaning of God
Brunnert
The fall of man broke our relationship w/God, but not our ability to reason
