Death & Afterlife
Rich man & Lazarus
Rich man ignored lazarus the beggar, so was sent to hell and tormented whilst lazarus ended up in heaven
-
Portrays heaven & hell as physical places, since the rich man could not leave
Just a parable, not to be taken literally, instead symbolises the state of the conscience after we do good or bad
-
Psychological reality
There is no afterlife, they are only symbols for psychology of happiness, suffering and repentence
They are only eternal if they are places or states, not eternal if they are symbolic
-
Creates authority issues, opens up the bible to interperetation, suffers from SE issues
Purgatory
A place of temporary punishment for those who have died after commiting sin, but nor repented
Sheep & goats directly contradicts it, no middle ground
Moral arguiment
It is unjust to be condemned to hell for minor sin, yet also contradicts God's justice to be forgiven, Therefore Purgatory is the best middle ground for the scenario
The Catholoic pedos
The sale of indulgences was the policy of the Catholic Church to accept money in return for forgiveness of sins. Purgatory was an important part of this – if you gave the Church money, the priests would pray for your recently dead relative, claiming to get them out of purgatory faster. Luther claimed Purgatory was ‘fabricated by goblins’ and wrote a 95 thesis critique of the practice of the sale of indulgencies.
Hick
-
People are resurrected into a normal world to redeem themselves under soul-making theodicy. Hell does not exist due to God's omnibenevolnce
-
Moral action is purposeless, endless chances
New earth
Heaven is a perfected state of Earth at the end of time Earth will be cleansed by God and returned to its perfect state. After final judgement, the righteous will enjoy eternal life, suggestive of physical resurrection and a physical afterlife
A thief next to Jesus is being crucified too, Jesus tells him 'you will be with me in paradise today', suggesting that Heaven exists at this time, judgement takes place immediately and those who repent are saved
TRANSLATION ISSUES
1: Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise
2: Assuredly, I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise
Spiritual reality
The growing view, some interperret that it is a spiritual state of the soul where bliss is experienced eternally and not as a physical place
Immeidately after death, there is presence with Christ
New testament is largely uninterewsted with what comes after death but before resurrection. If early Christians wished us to know what a soul is, they could have said so. Platonic influence has caused a skew in how people view the soul, causing popular beliefs such as our soul moving to heaven/hell
Spiritual resurrection
Deniers that Jesus' resurrection was physical, and they therefore deny that our future resurrected bodies will be physical. They typically claim resurrected bodies are non-physical, or simply just souls w/ a physical appearance
A divine being cannot have a physical body, as mentality is more a sign of perfection
Ahnnilationism
Hell is no longer immoral or involved in suffering at all, we just cease to exist
