Origins of psychology
Wundt - introspection
1879 Wundt opened the 1st laboratory dedicated to psychology, beginning of modern (scientific) psychology - separating psychology from philosophy
Analysed working of the mind in a more structured way with an emphasis on objective measurement and control
Aim was to record thoughts and sensations, analyse into constituent elements (in the same way a chemist analyses chemical compounds) in order to get an underlying structure
Argued that conscious mental states could be scientifically studied using introspection (Latin for ‘looking into’)
-
Believed our perceptual ability enables us to observe and make sense of the outer world, our introspective ability enables us to observe our inner world
Trained psychology students to make observations and use the results to develop a theory of conscious thought
