purpose: to understand the persons occupational functioning, guide decisions, set goals and evaluate outcomes
standardised: quantitative, validated, structured

non standardised: qualitative, flexible, contextual
- observations, informal interviews
top-down: focus on participation, identity, adaptation
- MOHO based tools
bottom-up: focus on skills and performance components
- ROM, MMT (not MOHO based)
assessment methods:
- observation: naturalistic, formal/informal, environmental fit
- interview: structured/unstructured, builds rapport
- self-report: consumer-driven, assesses lived experience
