Overall Justification:The Doukhobor factions are the most likely suspect in the mysterious death of Peter Verigin because there is a strong collection of evidence suggesting their possible involvement. Multiple reports from the time show that certain Doukhbor individuals and groups may have had both the notice and the opportunity to kill Verigin. For example, Sam Kemenshikloff, a known Dukhobor fanatic, was overheard days before the explosion saying, “wait and see what happens to Peter Verigin in a few days,” which strongly suggests that he may have had prior knowledge of the attack. In addition, several independent Doukhobors who were working in the area were absent from their jobs on the day of the explosion, and some were even connected to the theft of dynamite that could have been used to create the bomb. One of these men, Stereleoff, was a former soldier who was reported to be hostile towards Verigin. Furthermore, eyewitness reports state that two men, believed to be Doukhobors, boarded the train carrying suitcases, placed them near Verigin’s seat, briefly spoke with him, and then left without taking their bags, which raises serious suspicions about whether they planted the explosive device. There were also prior threats made against Verigin’s life, including an earlier attempt to burn down his house, suggesting that someone had already tried to kill him before. Additionally, there were internal power struggles within the Doukhobor community, and some members may have wanted Verigin removed as leader so that his son or other individuals could take his place. Historical records also show that some Dukhobor factions had access to explosives and had used bombs in the past, making it entirely possible that they were capable of carrying out such an attack. Taken together, this combination of threats, suspicious behaviour, stolen explosives, possible motives, and past violent actions makes the Doukhobor factions a serious and the most necessary focus for further investigation in solving Peter Verigin’s death.
