Science: Exam SEM 1, Groupings:, Bonding - Coggle Diagram
-
Groupings:
Group 1
-
- are too reactive to be found in nature
- have typical metallic properties
- display similar metallic properties
- reactivity increases as you move down the group
-
-
Group 17
-
-
- not found in nature but in salts
- atoms get bigger but less reactive as you go down the group
- all form molecules with themselves (diatomic)
- all have a colourless and poisonous vapour
Group 2
-
- react similarly to Group 1 metals but are less reactive
- form +2 ions (means they drop two electrons, to become a positive ion)
- metals have a weak hold on their outer electrons, which is why they get more reactive and unstable as you move down the group
Group 14
-
- Allotropes: are forms of the same element but have a different molecular structure therefore different properties
- Allotropes of carbon: Amorphous, Diamond, Graphite, Bucky-balls
- Organic Molecules all contain carbon
- Organic Molecules make up: Living organisms, fossil fuels and plastics
Group 18
- colourless and occur naturally in the atmosphere
- can be separated from liquid air through distillation
The transition metals
-
- Iron, Gold, Copper, Silver, Zinc
Bonding
Ionic bonds
- form between metals and non-metals
