these were for upper class, fee paying, expensive schools, boarding school.
the fagging system - prefects used to use the fags as servants and bully them. parents dissaproved, threatened to move their children. it was seen as teaching them the respect for leaders
Thomas Arnold- headmaster of Rugby public school, he promoted regulated sport, developed the 'house system'. he also helped develop the idea of muscular christianity. ( linked sport with being a christian gentleman through a sense of duty). he believed establishing a link between development of character and sport, as cult of athleticism.
the cult of athleticism - cult - craze or obsession. athleticism - combination of physical endeavour and moral integrity.
they took the games such as mob football and gave them rules = rational recreation. the public school boys wrote down the rules to ensure fair play = led to cofication of rules

army - increasing the moral and fitness of their soilders
clergy
teachers - often in the schools they attended as boys
university - melting pot
parents - influencing their own children
contributed to the development of sport

Characteristics of public schools -
Boarding- time available increases
expanding - as numbers were increasing, houses were formed
non local - a variety of regional games were adopted
spartan - harsh treatment and living conditions prepared boys for competition and adult life
controlled by trustees - influential people keen to promote the school and invest in sporting success
endowed - well - endowed schools that received large gists of money or property could have better facilities
fee paying - fees could develop facilities
gentry - influential family brought status and money and influenced the types of activities brought into the schools
The three stages of the cult of athletisism
stage one - boy culture, bullying, and brutality. The absence of police meant the army had to control unrest. time of public school expansion
stage 2 - dr Thomas Arnold and social control - criminal law was changing eg banning of animal cruelty, transport improved dramatically. Arnold used the games as a vehicle for establishing social control. his main aim was to produce christian gentleman
stage 3 - the cult of athletisism ,
Athletisism in girls public schools- there was a delay because ;
the traditional roles of women- regarded as the weaker sex
anxiety over the wearing of revealing clothing for physical activity
it was thought of as innappropiate
