happened during religious holidays
the sport had no written rules as they were illiterate
played within villages locally as the only transportation was walking
violent because the society were hard and violent in nature, as well as the lack of rules - only rule no death
lower class

game played by upper class, which involved animal cruelty and gambling. this was made illegal by an act of parliament. the cockerel was tied to a stake, you would have to pay to throw stick or stones and whoever knocked over the bird and picked up the stick you could claim the bird as your own
Class
upper class - aristocracy, landowners, real tending and house ridding
lower class - worked manually, long hours - bare knuckle fighting and mob football
Amateur played for the love of the sport, professionals played to earn money.
Both classes would do pedestrianism, the lower class would compete in walking or running races and the upper class would be patrons for the lower class participants. also cricket played by both classes
Gender
women = weaker sex, activities were shaped by expected behaviour of women. not too strenuous or dangerous.

very little formal rules as lower class sports tend to be violent as they were illiterate or animal baiting
education and literacy
upper class were educated. lower class were uneducated. the upper class could read and write rules of sophisticated and therefore participated in real tennis

lower class - no time to play sport, worked long hours led to exhaustion, played on holy days,
Upper class - a lot of free time, could do activities that were longer lasting eg fox hunting
Availability of money
upper class were able to afford equipment to play sport, eg horses, owned land
Peasants couldn't afford equipment, long hours, little pay
Transport
Upper class were able to travel to play sports - used horses and cart
Peasants did not have access to transport and played sports locally - roads were in an appalling state so they would just stay in their villages
