Ch. 17 Research Proposals
When writing research proposals, it should appeal to the funder's priorities. Research them. Establish a connection between your own goals and the funder's priorities.
Funder's may provide specific instructions on how to format and present your proposal. Be sure to follow these exactly. This is maximize the odds of receiving funding.
Sections that should be included in your proposal:
Abstract
Specific Aims
Background, including statement of need
Research Design
Significance/Impact
Some questions that should be answered in your proposal:
Why this project?
Why you?
Why at your institution?
Why this sponsor?
Why now?
Abstract
Abstract should be concise and summarize the main points from each section of the proposal.
Clearly state the objective of your proposal, this should follow the statement of need.
A crucial component of your proposal is the statement of need which states why your research is needed.
The first and last sentences are the most important
Use the first sentence to introduce the proposals topic, start with an important key term.
The last sentence needs to state why the proposal is important to society. This will be the impact statement.
Specific aims
This section can be part of the abstract or its own paragraph.
They should be written as a list rather than in paragraph form and should be boldface. Each specific aim can be followed by a brief paragraph describing the approach being proposed.
If a hypothesis statement is included, italicize it.
Background
After the abstract, provide relevant background information. This can be written as a single paragraph or multiple subsections based on your aims.
The purpose of this section is to convince the readers of the significance of your proposal.
Standard structure begins with known background info, then discuss the problem or what is unknown. You can finish with a statement about the aim or the hypothesis.
Impact and significance
To finish the proposal, include a statement discussing the impact and significance of the project.
Focus on the benefits to humans rather than personal goals.
It may also be beneficial to include a proposed budget for the project.
