        Coketown, from Charles Dickens’s Hard Times, is a fictional industrial city that represents the harsh reality of Victorian industrialization. It is described as smoky, monotonous, and polluted, with identical red-brick buildings, endless factory chimneys, and a blackened sky. The air is POLLUTED filled with soot and noise, and the people are REDUCED TO MACHINES AND DEPRIVED OF THEIR OWN IDENTITY

        Symbol of industrial dehumanization – workers are treated like tools.
        
        Critique of utilitarianism – life is ruled by facts, not emotions or imagination.
        
        DIVIDE BETWEEN RICH AND POOR – poor living conditions reflect moral failure, and provide materials and goods for the upper classes
        
        Loss of individuality – the sameness of buildings mirrors the loss of personal identity.

Ishmael suggests that white, as the "colorless" color, can intensify both the good and the horrifying "is traditionally linked to purity, innocence, and divinity. However, Melville complicates this by showing that white can also suggest emptiness, terror, and the unknown"
